WEEKEND EVENTS AT JANES ISLAND STATE PARK
August 16-18, 2013
Held at the Ranger Julie Schweikert Nature Center.
Minnow Madness – Friday 7:00 pm
Want to catch some minnows for bait or just for fun? Recycle a 2 liter bottle into a minnow trap that really works. Bring a clean bottle if you have it - if not, we have some for you.
Crabbing Derby – Saturday 10:00 am
Who is the best crabber in camp? Come learn about crabs and how to catch them-then put those skills to the test. Who can catch the biggest and the most? For kids 15 and younger; participants MUST be accompanied by an adult. We provide the bait and equipment.
Feeding Time! – Saturday 12:00 pm
Join Naturalist Terry while she feeds our snapping turtle her three course lunch.
Creek Critters – Saturday 2:00 pm
Let’s pull the oyster cages of Daugherty Creek Canal to see who else lives in their benthos (bottom) community. We might even catch a naked gobie!
Meet a Living Dinosaur-Saturday 4:00 pm
This animal has not changed in over 300 million years. Learn how the horseshoe crab survived and how their numbers are now decreasing. We also will be making a 3-D craft.
Construct Your Very Own “Beanie Baby” – Sunday 10:00 am
Your beanie baby will not be made out of cloth and stuffing but from a seed hung around your neck where you will keep it safe and warm until it grows into an adult.
